Open enrollment is short, and the plans available change every year. An hour of preparation beforehand turns a stressful deadline into a straightforward decision.

Gather your information first

Collect last year's medical spending, your current plan documents, a medication list, and the names of the providers you want to keep. Everything else follows from those four items.

“The clients who breeze through enrollment are the ones who prepared before the window opened.”

— Michael Chen

Your pre-enrollment checklist

  • Documents

Plan ID card, last year's Explanation of Benefits, and income estimate for subsidies.

  • Spending

Total what you actually paid last year, including prescriptions and dental.

  • Providers

List the doctors and facilities you are not willing to change.

  • Calendar

Note the enrollment deadline and set a reminder a week ahead.

Bring the list to a licensed agent and you can usually settle on a plan in a single conversation.
